Dahabiehs are traditional Egyptian sailing boats. Historicaly, boats were used to travel in Egypt. Sail and oars were the only means of transport on the Nile before the steamboats. In the 19th century, the Dahabiehs were appreciated by the elite of tourism. These priviledge classes wished to visit the Egyptian temples but they needed 2 or 3 months to sail up the Nile and 1 month and half to go down with the current. The advent of steamboats, then the increasing number of tourists and steam powered cruisers has stopped their use and they have been abandoned, rotting on the banks of the Nile. Recently, some Dahabiehs were restored and new ones have been built to the same design. The Dahabieh "Albatros" is one of those newly built, she retains the distinctive character of the traditional Dahabiehs: she sails with 2 "latin" sails, we use the large upper deck to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Nile. With the flat-bottom, we can stop in some places inaccessible to the larger cruise ships, to visit some sites and temples not well known and to explore the small villages. But we have laid out our boat so that you may enjoy the modern comfort and travel in better conditions: meticulous finish, air conditioning throughout the boat, flat screens and multimedias players, Internet.
